CHENNAI: The country social welfare and women’s empowerment section is set to decode against child marriages.
Having a report on Child Rights and You (CRY) signaling high cases of child marriages in certain pockets of this nation, minister Geetha Jeevan has taught officers to carry rigorous legal actions including reserving the family and relatives of those victims of child marriages.
“We’ve requested district social welfare officials (DSWO) to accept strict legal actions in most instances of child marriages.
We’ve requested the police and stakeholders division to act quickly to put a stop to these practices,” Geetha Jeevan informed TOI after conducting a review meeting by senior officials within her department and authorities on Monday.
Child Rights and You (CRY), a non-governmental firm, released a report saying that kid unions had increased by 40 percent in 10 cubes and 72 tribal cities in Salem, Dharmapuri, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul areas.
Back in 2020 May, 98 kid marriage instances were reported in such districts, according to 60 cases reported during the corresponding period in 2019.
In 2020 lately, 318 kid unions were reported in CRY-operating regions at the four districts,” stated a formal, citing the report.
“We’ve requested district-level officers to trigger village-level kid union prohibition committees to act contrary to the illegal clinic.
Collectors will examine kid marriage instances occasionally,” added the minister.
She directed that the DSWOs to submit status report of impending cases.
Due to inadequate comprehension among Japanese people, they don’t consider child unions as prohibited.
“The bad socioeconomic state of households is just another motive for these clinics continuing today,” explained a senior officer at the social welfare section.
Sensitisation and bringing about an attitudinal change among Japanese folks are requisite to put a stop to these practices, ” he explained.
