Nagpur: In what appeared to be a brutal act, alleged mass killing of wild dogs by the residents of the Tony community had been deep.
According to complaints submitted by the Animal Welfare Organization of the Maheshwari Animal Welfare Foundation, residents of the apartment scheme in Besa poison around 15-20 street dogs in the last 30 days.
While animal activists got a tip-off of the intense activity, the complaints made for the Beltaodi police station revealed that they were trying to save three poisonous dogs but could not.
When members of NGOs reached the community a few days back, they saw four dead dogs in the park outside the community.
“The driver of the ambulance we noticed the other three dogs nearby, who fumbled.
He immediately rushed to the organization’s hospital but they died during treatment,” said Animal Welfare Activist Karishma Galani, who is also a community member for the prevention of cruelty (SPCA).
While the doctor confirmed the high opportunity of poisonous dogs, post-mortem could not be done.
The police have issued a warning letter to residents.
“If the incident happened again and the post-mortem report showed that the dogs were deliberately killed, we will submit the first information report (FIR) to the population,” said a senior police officer from the Bellarodi police station.
Toi has not named the community because there are no members who can be contacted.
Complaints by activists also stated that they received a call from one of the closest residents, which with anonymous requirements, acknowledged the mass killings of animals.
Toi got access to call recording, where residents clearly stated that killing the dogs was a collective decision of all residents.
“What else can be done? The dogs became fierce, we couldn’t get out, our children were at risk,” he said.
While the action was criminal and inhuman, it was also a strong indication of the increasing conflict of humans in the city because of the failure of the civil body in controlling the dog population.
“It’s been more than a year since the birth program of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s animal stops.
Cases of bite and dog attacks are on the rise and thus people are involved in acts of cruelty on animals that are so cruel.
Having effective sterilization is done, this problem will not be ever happened, “said Galani.
Referring to the norm, Galani said that residents should not violate the rules and complain to NMC if there is a threat faced by stray.
“What does Corator do from moving dogs from one area to another? They must take responsibility for their ward and make sure that the dog is sterilized,” he added.
