Tobacco causes 33% of cancer; At 50%, the highest in Ne: Research

Bengaluru: Cancer associated with tobacco use constitutes 33.3% of all cancers reported in Indian hospital-based cancer registrats, regardless of gender.
It consists of 48.7% of all cancers among men and 16.5% among women.
Clinic Profile Research in India: Reports of hospital-based cancer applicants, 2021 ‘were carried out by a national center based in Bengaluru for Informatics & Research Diseases (NCCDIR), Branch of the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR).
NCDIR has used cancer cases for seven years, of the 96 hospital-based cancer registration (HBCRs’) under the National Cancer Registry (NCRP) program.
Data analysis of 6.1 lakh cancer cases, diagnosed and registered in NCRP between 2012-2019, has revealed that the prevalence of cancer cases is 52.4% among men and 47.6% among women.
More than 2 cases of cancer lakh are associated with tobacco use only.
The prevalence of cancer related to the highest tobacco-use in the northeast (50.4%), followed by Central India (42%), west (36.9%), north (32.9%), south (28.6%), and east (25.3%)).
However, in terms of absolute numbers, South India has the highest number of cases – 61,921 – cancer related to tobacco use.
Cancer applicants play an important role in cancer prevention and control by producing systematic and timely information about new cancer cases, said Dr.
Prashant Mathur, Director, NCCDIR.
Among cancers related to the use of tobacco reported from all HBCRs, the mouth of the cancer accounted for the highest at 24.4%, followed by lung cancer (22.4%) and tongue cancer (16.6%).
The highest cancer-related tobacco among women is mouth cancer (26.4%)
