Sonepat: With another disappointing show at the Tokyo Olympics, the archery federation sees “new early”, shifting the National Camp Recurve team from Pune to Sonepat where they will hold a two-day selection test on August 4-5.
This will mean that four recurve archers in Tokyo, scheduled to arrive on August 2, will get one day including before heading to Sontle where the trial will occur in the Yankton World Championship scheduled from September 19-26.
Asan Das is the only Indian remaining in the hunt for medals in the individual in the Tokyo match, as his wife’s number one Deepika Kumari’s wife on Friday made the quarter-final run out of the San Korea in the set.
The men and mixed teams were previously eliminated by Koreans in each quarter-final match.
“One Olympic cycle has just ended.
This world championship is the first tournament for the next Olympic cycle (Paris 2024).
We want to start again and give everyone a fair opportunity,” said Secretary General Aai Pramod Chandurkar told PTI.
“They have a tent in Pune (Army Institute of Sports) for a long time before the Olympics.
For now, we will hold a camp at Sonify, then we will receive a call.” The Urana Das, Pravin Jadhav and Veteran Army 39-year-old Tarundeep Rai who has announced his retirement after the Olympics, are three archers of the Indian team.
Deepika Kumari is a female member alone from India after a woman’s team failed to qualify for the Olympics.
“We don’t want to disturb the balance of the team atmosphere but at the same time we want to give a chance to the talent that appears.
We might see the third archer that emerged from the trial,” Chandurkar said.
Initially the trial was scheduled in mid-August but a fresh visa guide from the Yankton Local Management Committee forced AAI to advance the date.
“It will be a bit of a problem for Tokyo’s archers but there is no other way because LOC wants a passport detail to meet the US visa guidelines.” The head coach of the Indian team Lim Bahadur Gurung, who also retired later this year, is also likely to change.
“This will depend on the archer who makes cutting for the world championship.
Archery into individual sports, archers say in choosing a coach.” Sai Center of Excellence in Sonepat has become a training ground for compound archers for a long time.
Compound archers will be the first to conduct a trial from August 2-3.
