Chennai: The month after the old Mahabalipuram road becomes toll free, drive out of Chennai may be more expensive because the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) has decided to start collecting tolls in four places along the Chennai Outer Ring Road from next week.
The trial to collect the toll road in Varadharajapuram, Kolapperi (near Nazarathpet), Nemilichery, and ChinnamulaIvoyal began on Friday.
While the phase-i of the project between Vandalur and Nemilichery was completed at a cost of 1,081 crore, phase-II worked between Nemilicher and Minjur finished and opened for traffic in February.
“We have examined the barrier barrier function, Fastag scanner, toll collection system and camera installed at this location,” said a senior TNRDC official on Saturday.
Private agents have been defeated to collect tolls from next week, the officer said.
According to government estimates, more than 30,000 vehicles that can be charged will use a stretch every day.
TNRDC has not released the last toll cost list.
Even if Rs 40 is charged per vehicle, the agency will get Rs 43 Crore every year.
Tsadagopan, Residencivist from Pattabiram, said that Twowheeler traffic along ORR would be much higher because some residential areas had appeared on both sides of the road.
“The truck movement in stretching, which connects four industrial hubs in and around Chennai, is also expected to be high.
The government must focus on the safety of the road.
The maintenance of the toll road in Tamil Nadu is generally poor,” he said.
TNRDC officials said the advanced traffic management system would be installed in addition to road patrol, ambulance and rescue post.
Adequate lighting has been provided on all entries / outlists to ensure better visibility, he said.
