PANAJI: The price of vegetables has surged on the retail market because the short supply caused by rain is not the season and damaged plants.
Tomatoes, the main kitchen staple, have skyrocketed to Rs 70 per kg, while other vegetables also saw the ice suddenly in price.
“It has continued to rain without signs of reduction.
In addition to harvesting in the field being destroyed, even harvest plants transported to Goa are increasingly humid because of moisture,” Jaffar Mokashi, a vegetable vendor in Panaji Market, said.
It was studied that the price of vegetables had soared because of the circumstances such as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, from where vegetables were sourced by vendors in Goa, flooded with rain without the season.
This in turn of a damaged plant, said the executive director (MD) of Goa Horticulture Corporation, Sandip Faldesai.
He said that Greens who grew during the rainy season must be harvested immediately, however, the rain of pereis has brought havoc which produces great damage.
“Now it will need at least three more months for new plants to be ready.
Because prices have increased significantly, people must learn to drop vegetables,” he added.
Two days ago, the tomato level was Rs 42-48 per kg, which has now increased to Rs 68, while Ladyfingers have risen too.
Finger Lady sells at Rs 54 per kg, up from Rs 28 per kg two days ago.
Carrots sold last week for RS 38 per kg are now priced at the price of Rs 48.
The retail price of the cluster bean is RS RS 57 while French beans are 65.
