Top COP appointment: SC set deadline for HC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the Delhi High Court to decide within two weeks.
The petition was delayed before challenging the appointment of Senior IPS officers Rakesh Asthana as Police Commissioner Delhi.
The 1984-Batch IPS officer, who has shifted to Cadre Union from Gujarat and previously served as Director General of the Security Force, was appointed as Commissioner Delhi Police on July 27, four days before retiring on July 31.
He will have one-year tenure as the National Capital Police Chief.
The bench consisting of the Head of Justice N V Ramana and Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Surya Kant allowed LSGO ‘(CPIL) to move to the Delhi High Court to intervene in Asthana’s appointment.
Public lawyer Tushar Mehta appeared for the center, said that more time was given to the High Court because the government had to submit his response to the delayed application there.
Petition, moved by Advocate Prashant Bhushan, urged the court to override the central command to appoint asthana after extending the service period
