Kolkata: Even as a Covaxin supply has dropped into droplets in recent weeks, making thousands of second-dose recipients waiting for Jab, experts and doctors remain divided based on their opinions about the relative excess and losses of the two main vaccines as a third wave weaving tool.
While some people argue that Covaxin will now be a better bet because it can be effective against mutated strains – which tend to be active during the third wave – the other claims that covishield can fight a surge protein, the most damaging part of the coronavirus, better than covaxin.
Finally, they said, have not proven their effectiveness of other strains or even other proteins from Coronavirus.
Covishield only replicates the covid spike protein and is modified to resemble a coronavirus, attached to adenovirus which is weakened and injected.
Covaxin uses the overall coronavirus.
“The human system reacts to them in a very similar way and produces antibodies.
It is wrong to say that Covaxin produces better resistance because it is designed to act against all four viral proteins, including a surge protein,” said a professor of the Education Institute of Education & Research Postgraduate Research (IPGMER), Sarkar Diplipra called the “No need” covishield-covaxin controversy.
Protein Spike is the most prominent part of viruses and covishield designed to act only against it, which, can recognize and fight, explain Sarkar.
The protein surge in Coronavirus, Sarkar added, almost 40% of the size of an ordinary influenza virus.
The Director of Pulmonology of the Cmri Hospital Raja Dhar refers to a recent study that claims Covishield can provide life immunity.
“Even though there are few that can be chosen between the two, the available data does not indicate that Covaxin acts better on the non-surge protein of Coronavirus or it rejects the variant,” Dhar said.
“Covishield neutralizes a surge protein only while Covaxin provides secondary immunity to other viral proteins as well,” said the microbiology of the Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri Polong Hospital.
“So, it can be more effective against mutating strains.
The third wave is likely to be dominated by mutants and Covaxin will definitely offer more resistance, of course more than covishield.
However, that does not mean that Covishield is ineffective.
