Coimbatore: City traffic police on Tuesday continued the drive to identify and punish drunk drivers, even when the speed limit revised 30kmph was carried out on the 100ft road, Cross Cut Road, stretch Gandhipuram-Ganapatam, Jalan Bharathiyar, and Sukrawarpet-Avinashi Road Flyover.
In other parts of the city, the speed limit is closed at 40kmph.
To effectively apply speed limits in the city, traffic police officers, regional transportation officers, Tamil Nadu State Transportation Officers and officials of the State Highway Department held a meeting with representatives of the Lorry owner’s association, the Association of Omni Owners, Freightening Associations, Van Tourist Operators and Contact the taxi and automatic driver in the police community room here on Tuesday night.
Overcoming the meeting, S Senthilkumar, Deputy Commissioner of the City Police (traffic), said the revised speed limit for vehicles in the city limits was also published in Gazette.
“If the driver operates their vehicle within a fixed speed limit in the city, the rate of fatal accidents will decrease drastically.
Traffic police use a speed radar weapon to check the speed of the vehicle.
Those who violate the speed limit will be ordered and fined.” City police, however, only have two speed radar weapons.
“We plan to get more speed radar weapons to order more cases of speed limit violations,” he said.
Senthilkumar said they installed a signboard with a speed limit on the city limit.
Shows that they have stopped checking driving in a drunken state since March 2020 because of a pandemic, DCP said they had continued the same thing on Tuesday.
“Drivers will be made to blow the device of the breathing analysis to see if they are under the influence of alcohol.
If yes, the traffic police will reduce alcohol levels and remove Challan for drunk driving.”
