Coimbatore: City Police recently installed a traffic signal controlled remotely at the Tamil Nadu bus stop near the Textool Bridge on Jalan Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam.
The new system will help traffic police personnel to move freely and catch people who jump red light and violate other traffic rules.
Previously, they used sitting under the traffic umbrella and operating the signal through the switch.
As as many as 52 traffic signals function within city police limits.
The switch system was introduced about five years ago.
New traffic signals are managed by the root industry.
The police installed new technology at a cost of Rs 45,000.
Traffic police can operate signals from a distance of 50M-100m from there.
S Senthilkumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic), said to prevent traffic violations, the traffic signal system operated from remotely was introduced near the Textool Bridge.
The police did not need to sit under an umbrella and he could move freely to catch traffic violators, he said.
If the new system works well, it will be extended to other traffic signals in the city too, he added.
