Istanbul: Turkey said on Tuesday there was “no need to hurry” in recognizing the Taliban government in Afghanistan, adding that Ankara still held a discussion about Kabul’s strategic airport operating.
In a vast television interview, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu sounded a careful note about Turkish relations in the future with the Islamic Fundamentalist group.
He said the new Afghan government needs to be “inclusive”, adding that women and various ethnic groups must be given the post of ministers.
Taliban on Monday claimed total control over Afghanistan, said they had won the main battle for the Panjshir Valley, the remaining detention of the last resistance to their rules.
But Cavusoglu said the international community must take an approach to wait and see before recognizing his government, there was the same tone as adopted by the European Union at the meeting last Friday.
“No need to rush,” he said.
“It’s our advice for the whole world.
We must act together with the international community.” Turkey has held talks with the Taliban in Kabul, where he still has a diplomatic presence, about conditions where he can help operate the Afghan capital airport.
US officials said they were no longer controlling the airspace in Afghanistan and that the main airport in Kabul, was confiscated by the US military in August for evacuation, damaged.
Cavusoglu said Turkey worked with Qatar and the US with provisions in which airports can be reopened to regular flights needed to provide humanitarian assistance, evacuation of civilians stranded and rebuild diplomatic missions in Kabul.
But he said security remained the main sticky point, emphasizing that commercial flights would never be continued to airlines – and their insurance company – felt that his condition was quite safe.
“In my view, the Taliban or Afghan troops can ensure security outside the airport,” Cavusoglu said.
“But inside, there may be a security company that is trusted by the international community or all other companies,” he said.
“Even if the airline, including Turkey Airlines, wants to fly there, the insurance company will not allow it.”
