Ankara: Turkish police have arrested 506 illegal immigrants in the largest city of Istanbul in the country, authorities announced.
Police forces recently imposed their control of irregular refugees and detained 506 non-documented foreign nationals, including 239 Afghanistan, throughout the city on Wednesday, the office of Governor Istanbul said in a statement on Thursday.
It adds that the captured migrants are sent to the local repatriation center for deportation procedures.
Governor Istanbul Ali Yerlikaya said 38,251 irregular migrants had been arrested in all cities since the beginning of this year.
Turkey, the main transit point for asylum seekers on the way to Europe, lately witnessed the increase in the entry of Afghan refugees fled their homeland.
The country accommodates more than 4 million refugees, including 3.6 million Syrians, on its borders, mostly in Istanbul.
