Thiruvananthapuram: Zookeepers died due to snake bites at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo on Thursday.
Harshad, 44, the zoo keeper entrusted with reptile care was reportedly bitten by King Cobra as he was cleaning the back cage.
Cobras is not put in the cage because it is locked and stored in the back cage.
There are three King Cobras at the Trivandrum Zoo.
A snake is stored separately while the other two are accommodated as a partner.
Officials suspect that Harshad may have bitten by snakes stored in one of the back cages.
He rushed to a medical college hospital but his life could not be saved.
Harshad, a resident of Kattakada, left his wife and children.
The snake house for cobra is designed in such a way that there is an exhibition cage, keeper cabin and back cage.
The back cage is set on the platform lifted behind the exhibition enclosure.
This is a wire mesh structure equipped with shutter.
When the exhibition cage needs to be cleaned, the snake is pulled into the back cage by lifting the shutter and guided back in the same way.
The authorities believe that Harshad might have put his hand in the cage without guiding the snake out.
Maybe because of a split second but he was bitten and in a short time he fell on the floor.
Zoo Minister J Chinchu Rani visited Harshad’s House Harshad and paid homage to the family.
Shyju, who took care of the bear in the zoo, said he was on his way back for lunch, when he heard a panic knock on the baked door of the snake house.
He thought someone might accidentally lock Harshad from the outside.
He saw Harshad lying on the floor, moving his legs, his cellphone spread insistently and garbage scattered throughout.
This is the death of the two zoo guards at the Trivandrum Zoo in the past two decades.
