New Delhi: Images of Indira Gandhi International Airport who rushed to make a round on social media on Saturday.
Although incompetent, the scenery depicted in videos is not uncommon.
Every time, there is an intense shower in Delhi, the airport has suffered.
But work is ongoing to fix the problem.
Delhi International Airport Ltd has held a series of meetings with state and central government institutions over the past three years, mostly to find ways to expand underground drainage systems and create new drain channels to manage excessive runoff during the rainy season.
Now, there are plans to make two additional water channels, one in the South Air Parcel and one in the North Air Parcel.
However, while someone is waiting for approval of the Department of Forest and wildlife even though Delhi’s development authorities have cleared it, others have not received approval from DDA, even though there are permits provided by other institutions, including PWD, the construction of agents.
Based on the topography of 2,500 hectares where Igia stands, the land has been divided into two parts: North air packages and South air packages.
While the first includes terminal 1, terminal 2 and air cargo operations, the latter combines terminal operations 3.
Resources at the airport said the North air package would be affected more by heavy shower, with DDA channel network, 2.5 meters wide and inside 1 meter, inadequate for monsoon rainwater.
“Even 20mm rainfall is enough to cause waterlogging on the north side, with additional rainwater from the intersection of Mahipalpur and NHAI flows into the North Access layer and causes waterlogging there,” the source said.
“There are no drainage facilities around it to prevent water accumulation and water flow to the north side of the airport and collect at the western tip near the North Utara Runway area.” The initial discussion of the improvement of this problem began in 2014.
After the meeting among stakeholders, DDA provided consultation to IIT Roorkee in 2015 and two years later the new disposal alignment was resolved.
After DDA received funds from the Ministry of Development Urban Union in 2019 for the work, a private company was awarded a contract for the construction of the manufacturing channel.
However, this project has not received permission from the Department of Forest and Wildlife of the Delhi government.
TOI has accessed documents related to meetings recently between calls, Delhi, DDA, PWD, and irrigation & flood control departments.
While the four-cell boxes are dry, 12 meters wide and 2.75 meters deep, there is in the South Parcel, it can only handle rainfall of around 60mm before giving up on airlogging on T3 calculations.
A source said the steep gradient was 17 meters between NH8 and T3 worsened the situation, with water flowing towards the airport from the Radisson hotel and the adjacent area.
Dial propose additional drain channels for the airport.
In discussions with Delhi government and other institutions, appropriate approval agreements.
However, DDA’s agreement has not been realized.
Dda did not respond to the TOI query.
In the South Parcel, PWD and the Department of Irrigation & Flood Control builds South Outfall outside the airport when T3 is being built.
Dial, at present, also has maintenance contractors, who clean and jet all killing channels within the airport limit, including rain harvests.
When Tii contacted the call, spokesman reaffirmed that Saturday waterlogging was largely caused by a steep gradient between NH8 and T3.
“Gradient makes the location of the rainwater catch area and distributes water towards the terminal,” said the spokesman explained.
“Dial has worked with the state and central government agencies over the past few years with the demand to expand the underground drainage system at the airport.
Some discussions about this have happened.” A forest official, when asked about the disposal project, told toi that inspection It has been done and permission will be given after assessing the total number of trees that will be affected.
