Gurugram: The Forestry Department has chosen two barren areas in sector 10, which will be converted into urban forests using afforestation techniques developed by Japanese botany Akira Miyawaki.
The Miyawaki method, most depend on enriching soil quality by digging a small area and then placing a lot of water retaining compost and natural ingredients such as rice husk and straw, have gained popularity throughout India.
In this technique, tillers are scattered close, forcing plants to compete with each other for space and sunlight, produce green cover which can reach 30 times higher and ten times higher than traditional plantations.
The plot in sector 10 measures each two and two and half a hectare, and consists of barren soil where waste is routinely disposed of.
“We have chosen two areas in Sector 10.
The plan is to ensure that people are involved in the project so they care for the forest,” said a senior forest official.
The project will begin this month.
Gurugram lost the maximum of the forest cover in Haryana between October 2019 and February 2020, according to the Indian Forest Survey (FSI), 2022.
Of the 21 districts in the state, Gurugram lost 2.47 kilometers of square covers during this period, which, said experts, said experts is a cause of worry.
So, seeing the current scenario, the department plans to increase the cover of trees in the district with the help of participation of citizens.
“Our officials will carry out planting, but the locals will then manage the area,” the official added.
After witnessing the success in a similar project in the Rewari district, forest officials planned these new projects in Gurugram.
“We created two city forests in REWARI with the help of citizen participation.
Really barren land is now a full forest,” Sunder Sambharya said, division forest officers, REWARI.
In Gurugram, the plan is to plant original vegetation, at least four to five dominant species in the area, in accordance with the Miyawaki method.
The plot also requires careful and close monitoring and maintenance of routine plants for the first three to four years.
