UK calls for Western unity towards Russia, the threat of China

LIVERPOOL: West and its allies need to be allergic against authoritarianism, British foreign secretary Liz Truss said on Saturday, when he organized G7 colleagues with concerns about threats from Russia and China.
The meeting of two foreign ministers from the richest countries in the world in Liverpool, Northwest England, is the last personal meeting of the G7 Presidency throughout the year, before handing a stick to Germany.
The buildup of Russian forces on the Ukrainian border was at the top of the agenda, along with discussions about China, limiting Iran’s nuclear ambition and dealing with the crisis in the military-ruled Myanmar.
“We need to gather strongly to discuss aggressors who try to limit the limits of freedom and democracy,” Truss said when he officially opened the conversation, without mentioning certain countries.
“To do this, we need to have a completely united voice.
We need to expand our economic and security posture throughout the world.” Truss held talks on the sidelines of the summit on Friday with US Secretary Antony Blinken and Germany’s New Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Blinken flew to Southeast Asia next week during a visit designed to highlight the importance of the area in Washington’s strategy to stand to China which is increasingly assertive in the region.
The Minister of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) associations will join the G7 Summit for the first time on Sundays, in sessions intended for extensive talks about problems including Covid-19 vaccines, finance and gender equality.
South Korea, Australia, South Africa and India will also participate as “guests” chosen by England, with many participants taking part virtually because of the pandemic and the appearance of the Omicron variant.
Truss said before the meeting that he wanted a deeper relationship between G7 countries in trade, investment, technology and security “so that we can defend and advance freedom and democracy throughout the world”.
“I will push that point for the next few days,” he added.
Truss, who replaced Dominic Raab as England’s main diplomat in September, conveyed the address of his first major foreign policy on Wednesday when the crisis rose throughout the world.
He warned Moscow it would be a “strategic error” to attack Ukraine, following a growing concern over the buildup of Russian big forces on the border.
The one who echoed the comments delivered by US President Joe Biden to his colleague Russia Vladimir Putin in the virtual summit the previous day.
The British G7 presidency has been dominated by responding to the increasing international determination and accusing the violations of extensive domestic rights, including the minority population of Muslim minorities.
This week, the panel of lawyers and human rights experts in London concluded Beijing has carried out genocide by imposing population restrictions, including contraception and forced sterilization, at Uyghurs.
China rejected the findings of the tribunal.
At the peak of the G7 leader in June, Biden was driven for a stronger collective attitude towards China and Russia, and this week saw Washington, London and Canberra announced a diplomatic boycott from the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022.
Truss said West need to work to end “Strategic Dependence “Of the more low and medium-sized low-income countries, in various fields of energy to technology.
At the height he will encourage participants to provide these countries with more financing for infrastructure and technology projects, according to foreign offices.
The G7 countries and their allies must offer “alternatives for unsustainable debt from non-market economies” such as China, he said.
Truss will reveal the UK LED initiative – African investment resistance accelerator – to increase collaboration to invest in the “most fragile market” in Africa and help develop “an investable opportunity pipe”.
“This will help the G7 to fulfill its commitment to invest more than $ 80 billion to the private sector in Africa for the next five years to support sustainable economic recovery and growth,” added the foreign office.
