Srinagar: UNESCO includes Srinagar in the list of prestigious creative networks in the category of ‘People and Culture and Crafts’, the Mayor of Junaid City Azim Mattu told a press conference here on Tuesday.
Launched in 2004, the UNESCO creative city network aims to provide cooperation among cities that recognize creativity as a major factor in their urban development.
Srinagar J & K Regency is known for its long and famous people’s craft and artistic traditions.
Iconic crafts such as pashmina scarves, wood carvings, paper machines, Kani shawls, Souzni, Khattamband and carpets tied to hands are the characteristics of the city, said Director of the Mehmood Shah handicraft department, who attended the press meeting.
Calling a celebration, Mattu said finally the hard work of craftsmen, craftsmen, and Srinagar artists had received recognition.
“We want to celebrate and commemorate this historical milestone that the city of Srinagar has been achieved by finding a place for himself in the UNESCO creative city network,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference, Srinagar City corporate commissioner Athar Amir Khan said that the selection of Srinagar by UNESCO was a proud movement for one and all and “it must bring us further into prosperity, in a sustainable way, respect art, craftsmen, craftsmen and City culture “.
