BHUBANESWAR: Even though a record number of 97.89% students cleared the annual High School Certificate (HSC) examination, the results of which were declared on Friday, many are unhappy with the marks they got in the alternative assessment and are planning to appear for the exam physically when it is held.
The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, has provided an option for students to appear for the HSC exam in physical mode when the Covid-19 situation improves.
The form fill-up for the exam will begin from July 5, an official said.
Swati Swagatika Mohanty, who scored 534 marks out of the total 600, is quite disappointed.
“I did not take the Class X practice tests seriously and had not imagined that I would get my final marks based on them.
We attended physical classes and worked hard for the exam.
I hoped to appear for the board exams and expected to score above 560.
I am thinking of appearing for the exam,” said Swati.
Teachers said even though the overall pass percentage is much more, students are not happy, especially those who are meritorious.
Compared to last year, the pass percentage witnessed an 18% jump this year.
“A number of students who got A2 grade were expecting A1.
We are already getting queries from students who want to appear for the exams.
They said they did not give their 100% in the practice tests and in Class IX.
The preparation and seriousness of a board exam is certainly different,” said Chandan Kumar Rath, the headmaster of IRC Village High School here.
Parents, however, said there is no time left to prepare for the exam.
“Since the state government announced cancellation of Class X exam, children are not in a mood to study.
Now, after the results are announced, if they start preparing for the exams again, they may not get enough time.
How many more marks will they get if they appear in the exam?” asked Sukumar Sahu, a parent.
“Meritorious students have a reason to feel disappointed as they did not get performance satisfaction and could not write what they had studied.
It is very obvious that they are feeling unhappy.
Many did not appear for the Class X practice tests with all seriousness,” said Satyakam Mishra, an academic and a former board president.
