New Delhi: Unparlia behavior incidents by public representatives have increased in recent years and tarnished the image of democratic institutions, said Speaker Lok Sabha Om Birla on Wednesday.
Underlining that legislative credibility related to their members’ behavior and behavior, Birla said, “the privilege enjoyed by public representatives with responsibility intended to carry out their duties as a member of parliament effectively and without obstacles.” Inaugurating the 81st All India Presiding Officers Conference (AIPOC) in the House Parliament here, Birla stressed that members are expected to observe the highest standards of discipline and decorum, both inside and outside the legislature.
Expressing his sadness over the increase in unparilimenter behavior incidents by public representatives, Birla said that “this has tarnished the image of a democratic institution”.
Birla also called for public representatives for individual and collective introspection, about their behavior, discipline and decorum.
Stressing that the smooth functioning of the legislature helps in strengthening democracy, Birla said the legislature must function effectively in the public interest in accordance with the rules and conventions.
The speaker suggested that the agenda for the next conference in 2022 must be “discipline and decorum in democratic institutions and ensure transparency and accountability in these institutions”.
Birla also suggested that MEGA MPS and MLA conferences can be arranged in this country on the completion of 75-year independence.
