United Natons: Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner of the United Nations for human rights, emphasizes that law enforcement officials must be accounted for crimes against people from African descendants and alternative approaches to their membulses must be applied.
On Monday, Bachelet said in the 47th session of the ongoing human rights council that the Murder of African-American Human George Floyd in May 2020, was a critical point, which had turned the world’s attention to human rights violations routinely borne by Africans and people – People regularly African descent, report the Xinhua news agency.
In interactive dialogue with the human rights council about systemic racism, Bachelet said that his office had received information about at least 190 deaths of people from African descent by law enforcement officials.
He said that 98 percent of these cases occurred in Europe, Latin America and North America.
He urged relevant countries to recognize the systemic nature of racism and show stronger political will to ensure racial justice.
Urging human rights-based policy making, Bachelet also encourages the state to carry out policy audits and human rights practices related to law enforcement.
To reduce crime and improve safety, he said, greater efforts must be made to recruit and involve people from African descent in law enforcement, criminal justice systems and policy making.
