WASHINGTON: Covid-19 inpatient in the United States has increased by around 33% and deaths up around 40% from a week before, the US head of the US for controlling and prevention of disease (CDC) said on Wednesday.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, talking about media calls, said US Covid-19 cases, driven by omicron variants that spread quickly, are expected to peak in the coming weeks.
“The magnitude of this increase is largely related to the Omicron variant, which now represents around 90% of the Covid-19 case in this country,” he told reporters.
Inpatient has increased since the end of December because Omicrons exceeded the Delta variant as the dominant version of Coronavirus in the United States, although experts say Omicron is likely to be proven less than the previous iteration.
The recent increase in Covid death is likely to be a disadvantaged effect of the Delta variant, which surged before Omicron holding in the United States in December, Walensky said.
With Delta and other previous variants, death has been lagging behind the level of infection several weeks.
“We might see death from Omicron but I suspect that the death we see is still from Delta,” Walensky said, adding that it would take time to understand how Omicron L influenced the total death of Coronavirus.
