WASHINGTON: The US Senate leader has agreed to increase the Department of Finance’s loan authorities until early December, preventing the default of potential debt later this month, the leader of the majority of Senate Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday.
“We have reached an agreement to extend the debt ceiling until early December and our expectations, we can finish this as soon as today,” Schumer said referring to voting on legislation.
A senate assistant, who asked not to be identified, said the agreement needed an increase in the debt limit of $ 480 billion from $ 28.4 trillion at this time.
If approved by the Senate and Representative Council, the US debt limit will then be set at $ 28.9 trillion.
Democrats have tried to provide laws that will raise the debt limit until the end of 2022 but the Republican party blocked the effort.
If the new offer passes, the congress will have several weeks to try to agree to an increase in the long-term debt limit or other stop-gap size.
Congress also faces deadlines to fund the government in December.
