MADRID: A US military plane has flown around 400 people evacuated from Afghanistan to the Rota Naval Base, in Southern Spain – the first group of up to 4,000 people hoped there.
The flight landed at 9:40 a.m.
local time on Friday, a statement from the US Embassy in Spain said.
US officials, American and Spanish soldiers, red cross workers and alkallas volunteers are responsible for processing arrival.
The Rota Navy base and nearby air force base, both of them held a significant US military presence, had been overhauled for the past few days to welcome Evakary.
Photos on the official social media site base shows a large warehouse converted to a canteen and basketball court full of dozens of emergency beds.
The army was also photographed putting a tent.
The bilateral agreement signed last week between the Spanish and US governments allowed evacuation to two bases to 4,000 people when they were cleaned for continuing their journey to the US.
The Spanish government has placed a 15-day hat to stay in Afghanistan at the base, which is owned by Spain.
