Washington: Dozens of pro-immigrant groups criticized President Joe Biden’s policy on Friday, saying with the sustainable understanding of migrants on the US-Mexican border and other deterrent steps “cruel, violate the law and ineffective.” In a letter to Biden and top immigration officials, more than 80 organizations urged the president of the Democrats to restore the ability of all migrants to claim asylum in the United States and avoid new policies that limit asylum access.
Promising a more human immigration approach, Biden has reversed many restrictive immigration policies from his extension of the Republican, former President Donald Trump.
But the President of the Democrats has kept one of Trump’s most limiting steps that allowed US authorities to expel migrants who were caught across the southern border back to Mexico.
Groups urged Biden to not adopt any policy that forced migrants to wait in Mexico to resolve their US cases, they said “will no doubt place individuals in danger and violate US asylum law.” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Thursday that the United States would expand the online asylum registration system in the hope of migrants will apply remotely, adding that more changes will be announced in the coming days.
Maytors did not say which asylum seekers were eligible to use the online system.
Last week, the Biden government began to fly several Central American and Mexican migrants who were arrested at the As-Mexican border to South Mexico in an effort to prevent navier.
In the letter to Biden, the groups said they were “very alarming” about flights to South Mexico and reported that migrants were then shown to the remote part of Guatemala.
Marielena Hincapéé, executive director of the Los Angeles National Immigration Law Center, who signed the letter, said the flight signaled the Biden administration took a more stringent attitude.
He said it seems that Biden only focuses on arrest and deportation and not on the rights of asylum seekers when His promises of a more human approach implied.
“It really contradicts what Biden administration will do,” he said.
