WASHINGTON: US life expectancy fell 1.8 years by 2020, the final figure final showed on Wednesday, the sharpest decline in more than 75 years was driven by largely by Covid-19 pandemic.
Life expectancy at birth was 77.0 years for the total US population last year, down from 78.8 years in 2019, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Among the men was 74.2 years, while for women the figure was 79.9 years.
Overall, Covid is the cause of third death, taking into account 350,000 deaths, exactly more than a tenth of all registered deaths, the CDC report said, who completed the initial findings from July.
Some other causes of death also increase, may be related to difficulty accessing health care caused by a pandemic.
For the first time, the death of diabetes reached 100,000, while the death of an unintentional / accidental injury reached 200,000 the first.
The latest data emerged after the US Census Bureau released a statement that said the pandemic encouraged population growth to the lowest level in history, partly due to the death of the virus and immigration decline.
During the 12 months ended July 1, the United States population grew by 392,665 or only 0.1 percent, “the lowest level since the nation’s establishment,” said the agency in a statement.
“The population growth has slowed over the years because of the lower birth rate and reduces international migration, while the mortality rate increases due to the aging of the nation’s population,” said Kristie Wilder, a demographic in the population division at the Census Bureau.
“Now, with the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, this combination results in a growth rate that has historically slowly.” Even with the immigration decline during the latest 12 months, net international migration 244,622 for the first time beyond the “natural increase” of the US-born over the death of 148,043 in 2020 the agency said.
Because of the delay in chewing numbers caused by a pandemic, the latest population report of the census bureau uses mixed data that combines the estimation of the census 2020 once a decade with other sources, including birth records, death and migration.
Between 2020 and 2021, 33 states see the population increasing and 17 states and Columbia County lose populations, 11 of them have a loss of more than 10,000 people, the body said, called it the number of states missing “Historically large”.
Separate analysis shows Texas has the largest population increase in 1.1 percent, mostly due to domestic migration towards the country and increasing the level of net birth.
New York showed the biggest decline, falling 1.6 percent that year, mostly due to domestic migration outside the country, the body said.
