WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden on Friday booked reviews of potential declasification documents from the FBI investigation into September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
“When I ran for the President, I made a commitment to ensure transparency about document declasification on terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in America,” said Biden in a statement.
“When we approach the 20th anniversary of the tragic day, I respect that commitment.” Biden said his order directed the Ministry of Justice and other institutions to “supervise the document declasification review” related to the FBI probe.
The order requires lawyer General Merrick Garland to make documents decreased by the public for the next six months, he said.
Family members of the September 11 attack victims requested supervision of the US government on Thursday to investigate their suspicions that the FBI lied or destroyed evidence that connected Saudi Arabia to the hijackers.
Request in the letter to the Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz said “The situation makes someone or more FBI officials commit intentional violations with the intention of destroying or removing evidence to avoid disclosure.” Biden will commemorate the warning of the attack next week.
“My heart continues with the 9/11 family who suffers, and my administration will continue to be involved with members of this community,” said the statement.
“I welcome their voices and insights when we map the way forward.”
