Taipei: The Chinese military flew 16 fighter planes to Taiwan’s southern waters on Sunday as the United States expressed concern about what was called “provocative military action” near the independent government island that China claimed.
China sent 38 fighter planes to the area on Friday and 39 aircraft on Saturday, the most in one day since Taiwan began releasing reports on flights on September 2020.
Flights come during the day and evening, and it is not clear if China plans more Flight on Sunday night.
The statement from US Department of State spokesman warned that Chinese military activity was near the miscalculation of Taiwan’s risk and damaging regional peace and stability.
“We urge Beijing to stop the pressure of military, diplomatic and economic and coercion towards Taiwan,” said the statement.
This adds that the United States, Taiwan’s largest weapon supplier will continue to help the government maintain sufficient self-defense capabilities.
China and Taiwan split in 1949 during the civil war where communists controlled mainland China and rival nationalists formed a government in Taiwan, an island of 24 million people around 160 kilometers (100 miles) off the east coast.
