WASHINGTON: Top Senator from Democratic Party President Joe Biden warned on Tuesday that US relations with Brazil would be at risk if President Jair Bolsonaro did not respect democratic norms in October 2022 elections.
A distant leader, one of the leading international allies in Donald Trump, has warned that Brazil can see scenes that remind the mass violence on January 6 in Washington by supporters of false claims for the election of the former US presidential election.
In a letter to the State Secretary Antony Blinken, four democratic senators said that the disturbance of Brazilian democracy “would endanger the foundation” the relationship between the two densest countries in the western hemisphere.
“We urge you to explain that the United States supports Brazilian democracy institutions, and that every non-democratic break with the current constitutional order will have serious consequences,” said Senators including Dick Durbin, Democrats Bob Menendez, and Bob Menendez, and Bob Menendez, and Bob Menendez, and Bob Menendez, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The senators voiced the alarm on Bolsonaro claims without evidence that the voting system was mired in fraud and its suggestions that he would not admit defeat.
“This kind of reckless language is harmful to any democracy, but it is very unsolicited in the democracy of Brazilian caliber, which for decades has shown he is able to facilitate peaceful transfer of power.” Biden administration was low with a public statement about Bolsonaro, and Blinken met last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly with Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Franca.
A State Department official said the meeting was largely to encourage Bolsonaro skeptical climate to increase ambitions ahead of the high PB climate conference in Glasgow in November, with Brazil a player important for the planet because of the role of Amazon.
Bolsonaro, the rating of his approval was partly due to the severe Covid-19 outbreak, said he would not stage the coup even though some supporters had called for the military to forgive their power.
