Washington: A major defense official we said the plan was made for a while thousands of Afghans in three US military installations.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday that up to 22,000 Afghans and their families could be placed in the installation.
Kirby does not identify a more specific location.
Thousands of Afghans who helped the US as a translator and other roles have been desperate to leave Afghanistan since before the government fell to the Taliban during the weekend, in the shadow of the August 31 deadline to withdraw US troops.
Kirby told ABC “Good Morning America” that the US defense and the State Department worked together to evacuate as many Americans and Afghanistan as soon as possible.
Kirby said several thousand members of US services now arrived in Afghanistan there will be for the next few weeks to help evacuate.
