US Top Diplomats say China requires a more ambitious climate purpose

Beijing: China and the US have a “very good year” to collaborate in dealing with climate change, but Washington still encourages Beijing to adopt a more ambitious carbon reduction goal, said US diplomats in China.
David Meale, officials of the American Embassy, said that what China did in coal combustion would be very important for whether the world could meet the target capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) at the end of this century, as stipulated by the Accord The 2015 Paris climate.
China, the world’s largest energy consumer and the largest producer and coal consumers, emits 27% of world carbon dioxide, most of which countries.
However, so far, China does not show the intention to move its timeline to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 – 10 years slower than many countries – and for carbon emissions to peak in 2030 or before, said Deale, ‘Affairs .
The Senate has not approved the nomination of President Joe Biden for Beijing Ambassador, former official Electricity Department Nicholas Burns.
“This is a very good year for our collaboration,” said Measte, citing close relations and regular communication between John Kerry and Xie Zhenhua’s climate envoy.
China sometimes appears to show it will bind cooperation in climate change with other problems between countries.
However, Measte quoted a US-Chinese deal to work harder to cut this decade emission, reaching last month at COP26 in Glasgow, as an indication of Chinese willingness to get involved.
“This is a very positive result and one that we planned to be built in our bilateral engagement in the future and …
getting to the place where everything is accelerated, where the numbers look better,” he said.
While Washington and Beijing have many fields of disagreement, “This is one area where we work together and work together very productively,” said Measte.
Meale spoke to reporters on a briefing on Friday but his comments were booked until Monday.
While “no country where we need to” on carbon reduction, China plays the role of outsize because of its severe dependence on coal, Measte said.
“The goal of 1.5 Celsius that the world works in danger and if we will get to where we have to go, we must continue to increase our ambitions, continue to take new steps and will not happen more important than what China does,” he said.
“So there is an extraordinary need for involvement, expertise exchanges, collaborative thinking to ask yourself, how China can increase its ambition and increase its timeline so that we can save 1.5 destinations,” Measte said.
China’s actions will be “hopefully giving trust in other countries where the world occurs in climate change questions, will also inspire them to increase their own ambitions,” he said.
In a address this year to the United Nations, the Chinese leader Xi Jinping said China would not build new coal-fueled plants abroad.
Mrs.
it seems that China will continue with plants that have signed a contract, and remain unclear whether Chinese banks will continue to finance these projects in the future, US diplomats said.
XI promises have no effect on domestic and Chinese developments continue to build coal-fueled factories domestically at high speed.
With the increasing use of solar and wind, China cuts its dependence on coal as a proportion of energy production from more than 70% to around 57%.
China has also increased coal production in recent months to ensure a stable supply for winter warming, something that calls “challenging short-term developments.” “What is needed focus is one of the basic challenges of the transition away from hydrocarbons (for that) we need effective transition plans and actions,” he said.
Decade of rapid economic growth has dramatically expanded Chinese energy needs.
However, Measte said the A.S.
has shown that a country can continue to foster its economy while reducing emissions.
“We all have to see tradeoffs and transitions and how to get it.
It is truly true of the United States.
This gives rise to difficult political problems and raises difficult questions of science,” he said.
The absence of XI from Glasgow talks made criticism from President Joe Biden and questions about China’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Xi has not left China in almost two years.
