WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court on Monday handed over the last victory to a transgender student who fought for years to use a boy’s bathroom in high school.
The highest US court refused to hear the appeal carried by Virginia school officials against allowing transgender teenagers to use the bathroom that reflected their identity.
As usual, the court did not provide reasons for his decision, but two of the nine judges – both of them were conservative – said they would receive an appeal.
The decision went in the place of the ruling federal appeal court last summer supporting Gavin Grimm, who was born from women but identified as a man.
The court ruled that his high school violated the anti-discrimination law by not allowing him to the bathroom boy.
“I am happy that the fight for many years I saw me for whom I was finished,” said the 22-year-old player who began his legal battle at the age of 15 years.
“Trans teen deserves to use the bathroom with peacefully without being humiliated and stigmatized by their own school boards and selected officials,” he added in a statement.
Transgender rights are the subject of fierce political battles between progressive and conservative in the US, and the “toilet war” is one of the most prominent episodes in recent years.
Administration of former President Barack Obama asked public schools to let students use the toilet and sports dressing room according to the gender they identified.
But the replacement, Republic of Donald Trump, canceled the guide in February 2017.
Recently, conservatives who strive to preserve traditional gender norms have shifted their attacks on stage access for transgender athletes and medical care for transgender children.
