LUCKNOW: The special task force (STF) gunned down a sharp-shooter, carrying a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head, in an encounter in Gorakhpur on Sunday.
The history-sheeter, Parvez, had as many as 14 cases against him and was on the run after his name figured in the sensational murder of BSP leader Jurgam Mehndi in October 2018.
STF officials said Parvez was a native of Makhdumnagar in Ambedkarnagar and was considered close to don Khan Mubarak.
Police recovered a 9mm pistol, a .32mm pistol and cartridges from his possession.
“Parvez was absconding ever since his involvement in the murder of BSP leader Jurgam Mehndi came to light.
Mehndi and his driver Sunit Yadav were shot dead in Hanswar area of Ambedkarnagar,” ADG, STF, Amitabh Yash said.
Deputy superintendent of police, STF, DK Shahi, who led the operation, said cops received information that Parvez was coming to realize extortion money from a man in Pipiganj area of Gorakhpur on Sunday.
“A trap was laid near Chilauatal-Sahari Bandha border area.
A team member identified Parvez who reached there on a motorcycle.
Cops asked Parvez to surrended but he opened fire.
Police retaliated in which Parvez sustained a bullet injury.
He was taken to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Shahi said.
STF sources said Parvez was building a crime syndicate in Nepal.
UP additional director general (ADG), law and order, Prashant Kumar told TOI that UP police was taking stern action against criminals, mafia elements, members of the Popular Front of India and Naxals who were indulging in antinational activities.
