Vadodara: Women are tortured by their own parents for dowry

Vadodara: Reports of women who face harassment from greed-in-laws for the demands of dowry are very common.
But in a unique case, the 23-year-old Jagruti (name changed) was treated inhumanely and detained by his parents because her husband failed to give them Rs 20,000, promised by him according to the ritual of the community.
Jagruti was bound by bed at his parents in a village in Padra on Thursday.
Her husband called 181 Abhayam.
After saving women, Abhayam’s team referred to this case to Vadu police.
“The woman was previously married to another man and gave birth to two girls.
He divorced him because he could not give birth to a boy.
His parents then married him with workers who worked in a factory in Padra,” said an official Abhayam.
“Jagruti belongs to a community in Rajasthan who follows a strange tradition.
The woman’s family demands money from her husband while marrying their daughter.
This ritual is called ‘Daava’.
Parent Jabruti demands the RS 20,000 of the man and he has promised to pay money with recitation .
The couple married a few months ago but the husband could not give the money promised to his parents, “the official told the official.
Jagruti’s father then called his daughter at home a few days ago and told him that he would get his wife back only when he paid the promised amount.
Her husband reached his in-laws’ house in Padra on Thursday but his parents refused to let Jagruti leave.
When they became aggressive, the husband escaped from the place and named 181 Abhayam to ask for help.
“Meanwhile, the woman told her parents that she wanted to live with her husband.
Angry, parents tie it with a rope for the couch at home,” the official added.
