Madurai: The first flood warning was issued because the surface of the water in the Vaigai Dam reached 66 feet on Saturday morning with a full reservoir capacity of 71 feet.
The warning was released at 10 am.
According to an executive engineer assistant Department of Water Resources (WRD) from the Vaigai Dam Sub-Division, the dam has an average inflow of 4,025 cusecs on Saturday morning.
The discharge from the reservoir is 969 cusecs for drinking water and the main channel of Periyar AyaCut.
District Disaster Management Officials said that the second flood warning would be issued when the water surface rose to 68.5 feet, and the third and final warning for the possibility of flooding when the surface of the water crossed 69 feet.
In Mullaseriyar Dam, the surface of the water was maintained at 138.5 feet until 6 pm on Saturday.
This oppose the full storage capacity which is permitted 142 feet.
A senior PWD official said that the inflows and flow were maintained at 2,305 cusecs and that the whole discharge was for Tamil Nadu through the tunnel.
In the Madurai District, Kallikudi and Thirumbalam recorded 67 mm and 60 mm rainfall, respectively, in 24 hours to 8 in the morning on Saturday.
In the Virudhunagar district, Virudhunagar KVK and Kovilankulam each recorded 82 mm and 59 mm, during that time.
KamatchiPuram (63 mm) and palani (50 mm) in Dindigul and Manamadurai (58 mm) in Sivagangai recorded moderate rainfall in the south to Saturday morning.
