Vaxxed B’luru man fully recovered after 15 days at ECMO

Bengaluru: 39-year-old Techie from Bengaluru, who was fully vaccinated, suffered from severe Covid-19 pneumonia and was on the support system of the extracuration of the membrane (ECMO) for 15 days.
Since then he has recovered.
The man was received at the Gleneagles BGS Global Hospital on November 22 with high fever and difficulty breathing acute.
He shifted from the ventilator to Ecmo on November 27 when his condition deteriorated.
After two weeks of treatment at Ecmo, he showed signs of recovery and finally dismissed from the hospital on Wednesday.
Dr.
Sandeepa HS, Pulmonologist at the hospital, said the patient was treated with severe acute respiratory disorder syndrome (ARDS), which delayed the recovery period.
His condition became important because he was served late at the hospital and 90% of his lungs were broken.
Dr.
Gourishankar Reddy Mane, the Head of the Medical ICU and Covid Icu at the hospital, told Ti that the condition of the man had deteriorated quickly when he was taken in.
“After seeing the test results, we were rather skeptical, but the patient’s age.
And the fact that he did not have a comorbidity that gave us hope that he would respond to care,” said Dr.
Mane.
However, the man’s health continued to deteriorate for the next seven days even though all medical management, doctors added.
He also experienced gastrointestinal bleeding.
The man had taken care of a family doctor when he suffered a fever, but there was no covid test done when he showed the initial symptoms.
When he developed respiratory problems on November 22, he went to the hospital where the Covid test was carried out and he was found positive.
He was referred to the BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital on the same day.
ECMO is a machine used for patients who are seriously ill, especially when their liver and lungs are not functioning properly.
“For patients who suffer from ARDS and covid pneumonia, ECMO allows blood to pass through the lungs, allowing them to rest and heal,” said Dr.
Raghavendrra Chikooor, a senior consultant and head of cardiothoracic and blood vessels in the hospital.
However, the man needed medical support for three months and physiotherapy fully recovered, doctors said.
“Vaccines do not provide 100% protection, which must remember everyone.
In general, vaccinated individuals have a lighter infection, but there may be cases that reach the ICU …” said Dr.
Mane, added that satisfaction was seen between individuals Which is fully vaccinated, which tends to reduce their guards.
