Victorious, Taliban face a fierce new test in Afghanistan

KABUL: After conquering Afghanistan, the Taliban now face a formidable task to maintain peace in their own ranks and run the country on the verge of destruction, experts said.
For outsiders, hard lines may seem homogeneous and unite on all ideological and strategic problems.
But like other major political organizations, Islamic groups aged decades have divisions, competition, loyalty and factions.
The loopholes were mostly examined during 20 years efforts to defeat foreign forces led by us and the Kabul government widely shine as corrupt.
With the general enemy who was defeated, only a few weeks into the Taliban government, the group division seemed to be coming to a sharper relief.
On Monday, rumors that the shootout between the rival faction at the Presidential Palace had killed the Co-Founder and now Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar forced him to release an audio message stating he was still alive.
Before that, the naming of the government while putting the political tension of the group and may sow seeds for future problems, according to Niamatullah Ibrahimi, an Afghanist at the University of La Trobe Australia.
The main role is divided between the Taliban old guards from their spiritual birthplace Kandahar – including Baradar – and Haqqanis, family-based grouping with bond with intelligence spy agents between Al-Qaeda services and Pakistan’s strong services.
Under the first Taliban regime in the 1990s, the Kandahar faction has been dominant – but many recent military success has come down to Haqqanis.
“We really can’t underestimate the power of haqqanis,” Ibrahimi said.
“They have become a more sophisticated part of this movement in the military, maintaining important relationships with Al-Qaeda and the contents of Pakistan, but also have their own strength base in Afghanistan.” Family of Scion Sirajuddin Haqqani – Sticking terrorists by the United States and the $ 10 million prize target for his arrest – take control of the Interior Ministry, which will determine the tone for the Taliban rules.
He is a “natural choice” for that role, according to Graeme Smith, a senior consultant in the international crisis group.
“He organized several of the most elite Taliban battle units,” he said.
But the appointment of Haqqani’s meeting has also made it more difficult for the Western government to recognize the Taliban government or release the reserves of Afghan central banks frozen in the United States.
Failure to secure that foreign money and revenue can be seen as a blow to Baradar, key players in the West Talks ahead of US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Without foreign recognition, the Taliban will be difficult to manage what is called the United Nations as “economic crisis” in Afghanistan and “humanitarian disaster” that towered.
Competition between factions can cause further problems with Afghan neighbors, experts said.
The family of outsiders and the Taliban from Western Afghanistan, including those who have a link to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, are mostly excluded from the government.
“The Taliban has decided to fight the inclusive cabinet, ignoring the demand of a leading Afghan politician and regional countries to include non-Taliban numbers in their senior rank,” Smith said.
“This is good for Taliban cohesion, and will appeal to Taliban supporters, but the risk of alienating other Afghans and the international community.” Ibrahimi said regional forces such as Iran or Russia can return very well to fund proxy groups to secure their interests.
This is “recipe for conflict or violent resistance by others”, he said.
“(IT) creates opportunities for exploitation by regional forces that will not be happy with them.”
