Tokyo: India Boxer Vikas Krishhan (69kg) was beaten 0-5 and left with a bloody eye by local demons Quincy Mensah Okazawa when he bent over the Olympics here on Saturday after fighting with a shoulder injury in the round.
Krisan’s 29-year-old suffered a wound under his left eye on a high voltage clash.
“During the last sparring session in Italy (before the team went to Tokyo), he hurt his shoulders.
He got treatment and we hoped that he would be fine, he began without problems,” said the Indian High-performance director Santiago Nieva told PTI referring to Pre-Olympic Training Task Team in Italy.
“But when he tried to pierce Okazawa’s body, he hurt his shoulders again and couldn’t use his left hand properly.
He fought with one hand today,” he added.
Vikas was the only Indian boxer in action on that day.
Okazawa dominated from the beginning to the end and looked like a nimble foot dancer on the ring, controlling the trial easily against India, who competed in the Third Olympics.
“Vikas is seriously ill through the fight,” said close friends and the normal sparring partner of Neeraj Goyat.
Okazawa 25 years old was a descendant of Ghana and was a silver medalist at the 2019 Asian championship and quarter finalists in the World Championship in the same year.
He will come to face Roniel Iglesias seeded Cuban in round 16.
Iglesias is the 2012 Olympic gold medalist and also the former world champion.
On Sunday, world champion six times M C Mary Kom (51kg) and the Commonwealth Games Silver-Medal Manish Kaushik will compete in their opening battle.
“This is a difficult draw for Indians but we are at the Olympics, nothing is easy here,” Nieva said when asked about a series of complicated opponents who accommodated all Indian boxers in Medan.
“Everyone likes to have it a little easy to start but it’s impossible for not to give the best.”
