BYRD, a Democrat, carried out the most powerful state political engine for decades until his death in 1966 and was considered a “massive resistance” state policy architect on the integration of public schools.
Parliament members chose to remove statues earlier this year, decisions that came in the midst of years of movement in Virginia rich history to rethink who was respected in state public spaces.
The statue founded in 1976 is a stone’s throw from Capitol.
A nearby placard said the statue was dedicated as an appreciation of “devotion throughout a long public career to restraint and government program with the best interests of all Virginia.” Byrd’s son, the deceased Harry Byrd Jr., a Democrat – who turned into independent who began his career as a separation, replacing his father in the Senate, serving until 1983.
