Kolkata: A 30-year-old sweeper staff in a leading shopping center in New Town was arrested for allegedly peeking into a female toilet and recording it.
The incident was revealed on Sunday night when a woman went using a small room at Axis Mall and realized someone peered and recorded it from the top of the adjacent partition booth.
He immediately lifted the alarm and came out of the booth in the bathroom while adjusting his clothes and start knocking the room next door.
Allegations allegedly locked himself in the booth for some time before pushing the door open hard and knocked down the woman before escaping from the place.
In the next few moments, he came out of the mall.
The woman – resident block CE in New Town – first raised the problem with the mall before filing a complaint with the new city police station.
“The incident had happened around 9pm on Sunday and when we went to the mall, most of the employees had left.
We checked CCTV’s record and took out the man’s ID.
The next morning, we made the Authority Mall call him to the workplace where he was Arrested, “said a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissioner.
The police said the young man initially claimed that he accidentally entered the bathroom to clean it without knowing the woman was still inside but the police said he later admitted his crime in advance of interrogation.
The police are now checking their cellphones to see if he has pictures and videos of women in the small mall room stored in the telephone gallery.
A senior Axis Mall official said they apologized for the entire incident and had helped the police with all kinds of electronic and physical evidence.
“We have given them CCTV recording and background information about the person.
He is not a direct employee of the mall but was employed by third party service providers,” the official said.
The police identified the man as Goutam Mondal (30), a Sonarpur resident.
He was ordered under the IPC 354 C (Voyeurism) section, 354 D (stalking) and 323 (voluntarily causing illness).
He was produced before the barrackpore court and returned to trial detention.
