Chennai: The amount of rain significantly in the last week of August has left the city reservoir at a comfortable level and filling the body of the water.
It also carries migratory birds.
Fans in Marsh Palikarai, Kovalam Creek and Sanctuary Pulikus Birds have recorded more than 20 species of birds.
K v R Thirunaranan, who has monitored the birds on this wetland for the past two decades, said the Godwite tailed bar, which has been known to fly nonstop by Russia to Semenular Southern India, has been among those who look.
In Pallikarani, Green Sandpipers, long Bunyian, General Sandpiper, Sandpiper Wood and Ruffs have been seen, while Creek Curlew Sandpipers, Whimphells, General Redshank, Avocet Pied, Black Tail Godwits, Green Shanks, and Little Stints have been seen in Kovalam.
In restrictions, large knots, Ruddy Turn Players, Godwits Bar-Tailed, Sandpipers Terk and Sandpiper Curlew have been seen.
Some of these birds have been recorded to migrate from as far as Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China.
They will leave after the beginning of Northeast Monsun and return in large quantities after the end of the rainy season.
“At present there are around 50 of the crafts in the City Water Agency,” Tryunanganan said.
Most of these birds are rare sightings on wetlands that have a mixture of freshwater and saltwater.
A research team led by S Balachandran, Deputy Director of Natural Bombing History of Society (BNHS), has noted to see some of these migration birds at Calimere Birds Sanctuary in Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district for the past few decades for decades.
The team has since been involved in the ringing of different species of migration.
More than a decade ago, the hunter is known to trap some migration birds in Kovalam Creek, placing birds that die strategically to attract them.
However, with city-based bird observers regularly visited the location, it became an important place and hunting incident stop, said a source in the Ministry of Forestry State.
