Wainwright gifts for nature and conservation writing for this year have been given to the writer James Rebanks and Merlin Sheldrake.
The prize winner was announced at a direct ceremony on Tuesday (September 7) at the London Wetland Center.
While Rebank wins in the natural category for ‘pastoral English’, Sheldrake won conservation awards for ‘life turned out’.
James Rebanks is a farmer and British lamb writer, from Matterdale in Cumbria.
His first book was ‘The Shepherd’s Life’, published in 2015.
His book ‘Pastoral English’ is about what it means to have love and pride somewhere, and how, opposing all opportunities, may still be able to build a new Pastoral, which is not utopia , but a decent place for all of us.
Meanwhile, Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist and writer with background in plant science, microbiology, ecology, and history and philosophy of science.
‘Entrepreneurial’ life is a journey that changes the mind to a spectacular and neglected world, and shows that fungi provides a key to understand both the planet where we live and live itself.
It was in June that a long list for Wainwright gifts was announced.
It displays ‘flight vesper’ by Helen Macdonald, ‘The Wild Silence’ by Raynor Winn, and Anita Sethi ‘I belonged to here’, among others.
For those who did not get information, Wainwright prizes were created at Alfred Wainwright’s (British Felwalker, Guide Guide, and Illustrator) to showcase the growing genre of natural writing in publishing and to celebrate and encourage outdoor exploration to all readers.
It was originally conceived in 2013 by Frances Lincoln, the issuer of Alfred Wainwright’s guide.
This prize is supported by Frances Lincoln, the Wainwright Guide Publisher, The Wainwright Estate, and in partnership with national trust.
The £ 5,000 prize fund is divided and served to the author of two winner books.
