Dhubri: Alleged Dacoit desired in several cases have been killed at a police meeting in the Dhubri Assam district, police said on Sunday.
With the new incident, 25 defendants had been shot dead and 39 were injured at a meeting of police in the state below the government of Himanta Buswa Sarma.
Acting on the tip-off, the police established a checkpoint between the Chapar and Salkocha regions on Saturday night to arrest the accused people.
When he saw law enforcers, the Dacoits were allegedly trying to escape, forcing the police to give them a pursuit that led to a meeting where one of them was killed, while the other five managed to escape, said Police Supervisor Abhijit Gaurav.
Manhunt has been launched to accuse the remaining, he said, adding that the gun and several cartridges were confiscated from the meeting site.
Assam has witnessed a burst during a police meeting since Himanta’s head minister Buswa Sarma considers the office on May 10, with the opposition accusing that the police have changed “happy triggers” and are pampering themselves in their support.
The police claimed that most of the defendants who had been killed or injured at the police meeting have so far tried to seize firearms, or escape from detention.
Sarma stressed in the State Assembly that the police had “full operational freedom” to fight criminals in Ambit.
Taking awareness of Suo Moto, the Human Rights Commission Assam (AHRC) on July 7 asked the state government to institutionalize the investigation of the situation that caused death and injury to the defendant at the police meeting.
Previously, a lawyer based in Delhi Baru from Assam, Arif Jwadder, has filed a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the Assam police for a series of meetings that have occurred since Sarma took over on May 10.
