Mysuru: Proposal for building a yoga center at Park Freedom Fighters in subbararayangke has been opposed by sportsmen and public.
While the public wants a swimming pool in the park as planned, local elected representatives promote the yoga center.
The park in Narayana Shastry Road has accommodated the Bahusar swimming pool, which is a landmark in the city for more than five decades.
It was destroyed after Mysuru City Corporation took over and had proposed to build a hi-tech pool and a commercial complex at a cost of Rs 11 Crore.
But the project did not take off.
Meanwhile, the swimming pool in Saraswathipuram managed by Mysore University, has begun to be excessive.
During the summer, the billiard authority was forced to make nine batches per day, including general batches and for professionals, to allow around 2,000 people who came to practice swimming.
To reduce the burden on Saraswathipuram, working in a pool at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium and in the Pandit Puttaraja Gavayi Sports Complex at JP Nagar was taken.
But because both pools are not in the heart of the city, people continue to depend on the pool in Saraswathipuram.
Srikanth Swimmer from Agrahara said yoga can be practiced anywhere in open places, but because there is a scarcity for the pool in the city.
“We need a pool close to our place and MCC must build a swimming pool in the park,” he said.
International swimming coach S Sundaresh told Toi that seven years ago, the authorities had planned to build a center of excellence with a 25-meter swimming pool in the park under the PPP model.
“But the project did not begin.
Professional swimmers handed over several memorandums to the authorities for years.
We hope the authorities to hear our request,” he said.
Reacting to this problem, Mysuru Acting Mayor Anwar Baig said MCC was cheating plans to build a yoga center in the park.
“I will discuss with local MLA about building a swimming pool for people’s interests,” he said.
