Thiruvananthapuram: The Office of the Food Security Commissioner has warned the public to the purchase of fish from vendors where sand has been sprinkled with fish.
In a press release, VR Vinod food safety commissioner said that it was observed that some vendors sprinkled sand in fish stored for sale.
Such fish, if consumed, can cause health problems as a chance of microbes that enter the human body very high.
Fish vendors may not use these steps to store fish, and if found, the department will begin strong actions against the sale, warn the commissioner of food security.
In accordance with the specified security standards, the fish must be maintained and stored only in ice made of drinking water, added Vinod.
Those who sell fish must require food security licenses or registration.
