KABUL: Taliban on Friday urges Washington to pay attention to a call by the United Nations to open Afghan funds frozen in the United States, as a humanitarian crisis deeper.
The US authorities freezes billions of dollars in Afghan assets after the Hardline Islamists seized power in August after withdrawing foreign troops.
On Thursday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres asked Washington to lead and prevent “nightmares take place in Afghanistan” by releasing capital.
“The United States must respond positively international voices and release the capital of Afghanistan,” Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on Twitter.
Washington has taken control of nearly $ 9.5 billion assets belonging to the Afghan Central Bank.
The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have suspended activities in Afghanistan, resisting assistance and $ 340 million in new reserves issued by the IMF in August.
Many Western nations also suspended their assistance to Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world.
Assistance and the United Nations estimate that more than half of the 38 million country populations are expected to face hunger this winter.
“We must quickly inject liquidity into the economy and avoid destruction which will cause poverty, hunger, and destitution for millions of people,” said Guterres to reporters in New York.
His comment came two days after the United Nations said it needed $ 5 billion in assistance for Afghanistan in 2022.
