Thiruvananthapuram: Ayira and Padangayoor Ponds in Karode Panchayat here will soon get a new life because the authorities have started work to clean and renovate the pool with the help of Nabard.
Pond Seven Acre Ayira along Chenkavila-Ayira Road is the main source for agricultural activities in the area.
The pool was in a neglected condition for the past 15 years full of algae and plants.
“Previously, residents had used a pool for bathing, washing livestock and clothes.
The water from this pool was previously sourced for rice cultivation by hundreds of farmers.
Now, this fate that attended the pool has caused the final rice cultivation at Karode Panchayat” said Chenkavila Ward Kanherloor Saji.
When Ayira Pond covers a large area, Panchayat feels difficult to carry out cleaning and renovation activities.
“With our limited resources and funds, we cannot carry out the cleansing of the pool.
Water overflowing from the closest canal during the rainy season carrying mud and other waste stored in the pool,” said Karoda Karoda Karoda Rajendran Nair.
Now, with the help of nabard, renovation and cleaning initiatives worth Rs 1.55 Crore have begun.
RS 1.36 Crore has been allocated for Renovation Ayira Pond while the Puliyoor Pool One Acre received a reshuffle of RS 18 lakh.
The expected work under the project includes the elimination of the accumulation of mud from the pond and construction of safety walls.
According to officials, the entire project will be completed within six months.
With renovation, officials also plan to make tourist areas.
“Ayira Pond was once the main attraction and its actual beauty was captured in a song in Malayalam ‘Karimimpana’ movie.
Because it is located along the main road, we plan to play some pools to the pool.
Also, the path will be established,” said Saji.
