Water supply will not be affected, DJB said

New Delhi: Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on Saturday said the water supply in the national capital would not be affected following the closure of the Canal Ganges for maintenance until November 5, which mostly supplied Uttar Pradesh Western drinking water and irrigation, including Ghaziabad, closed for maintenance on Friday.
The DJB roughly supplies around 900-950 MGD (million gallons per day) water in the national capital.
According to DJB officials, regardless of ground water, Delhi heavily depends on the Yamuna River and in part in the Ganges for water supply.
It also got water from the West Yamuna channel, they said.
A senior official DJB said it did not need to panic because only a small portion of the water came to Delhi from Ganga Canal which could be a thorough supply of the Yamuna River.
“There will be no interference or lack of water supply in the city because of the closure of the ganga canal.
We have enough water in Yamuna so that the shortcomings of the Ganga canal can be fulfilled through excess water from Yamuna.
No need to worry,” DJB official told PTI in anonymity.
He said the maintenance of Canal Ganga is a routine exercise done every year.
According to officials of the Irrigation Department of Uttar Pradesh, the canal will be closed until November 5 and may have an impact on the water supply in Delhi along with other Western District.
Water supply in 19 districts, including Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, took out, Hathras and Firozabad, will be disrupted and farmers tend to face shortages, said irrigation department officials.
They say during the maintenance period, farmers may partly depend on tubewell and set the pump to irrigate their fields.
