Kolkata: Police Commissioner Barrackpore has launched the eviction drive to remove shrimp along the Belgharia Expressway to expand the road when Belgharia Expressway and Kalyani Expressway will soon be connected to the elevated corridor.
The police used the JCB excavator to destroy illegal stores on both sides of the toll road in Nimta, Baranagar, Belgharia, Durganagar, Dum Dum and North Dum Civil Area.
About 200 illegal stores on a 1.3 km stretch have been destroyed, police said.
The state government decided to connect both freeways with the corridor that was elevated because it would reduce travel with several kilometers for those who want to take Kalyani Expressway directly from Belgharia.
The Kalyani toll road is 40 km-long which starts from NIMTA in 24 Pargana connects the city with Kalyani in the Nadia district.
Heavy vehicles from Burdwan, Hooghly and Howrah can easily take advantage of the route by-pass to take Kalyani’s freeway.
Taking 8km Belgharia Expressway from Dakshineswar is the shortest route to the airport if someone comes from Baranagar, Belgharia or from a side by side, including Howrah and Hooghly.
Vehicles for North Bengal that pass through Belgharia Expressway can also take corridors that are elevated to reach Kalyani Expressway.
A temporary police camp has been established in NIMTA to oversee the drive.
A large police contingent from the police station, including Dum Dum, Nimta and Baranagar led by Ajoy Prasad, DCP, South Zone, Komisarier Barkarackpore was deployed.
“The authority of the construction of the state highway has issued a notification of 10 days to remove stores from stretches.
Some shop owners have removed their temporary stores.
Much to be destroyed to remove the 1.3 km of the toll road stretch because it will be connected to Kalyani Expressway,” Ajoy Prasad, DCP, South Zone, said Komisarier Barkoppore.
