Kolkata: Universities and college authorities are tracking undergraduate acceptance applications for backup category seats as a large percentage of them remain empty last year, despite many listings and notifications.
In 2015, the state government has directed each higher education institution to set aside 45% of seats for students who are included in various categories, including scheduled caste, tribal and OBC schedules.
According to the order on April 21, 2015, 22% of seats were provided for scheduled caste students, 6% for scheduled tribes, 10% for OBA and 7% for OBC.
Chairs in the general category increase accordingly.
But in recent years see college and universities, including the most sought after, struggling to fill the quota seat.
But at the same time, many students wanted to not get a bed in their preferred subjects in the desired college because they did not belong to the category.
When these chairs were de-reserved and thrown into all, most of the students contributed to receiving tickets to another place because the first semester had begun.
This year, many colleges have decided not to wait but to fill as many seats as possible by issuing some notifications and applying for desreservation after tiring all options.
“Some of the chairs were ordered to remain empty last year.
We issued some notifications and extend the incoming time limit but were unsuccessful,” said Somnath Mukhopadhyay, Secretary Chapter Calcutta University of all Bengal Principal Council and Dinabandhu Principal Andrews College.
“In the case of a chair not filled, we can apply for de-resegevtion.” The Bengal Bengal Western Education Act (Entrance Reservation) ACT, 2013, has a clause that allows the de-reservation of chairs with the approval of the backward class welfare department.
It can only be done if the seat in the category that is ordered does not fill even after the deadline.
“But sometimes, the approval of the department arrives when all the students will receive an entrance ticket in other colleges and the first semester has begun.
Recognizing new students cannot after that,” said the school principal from Kolkata South College.
A department official said the chair was dereserved after going through the process followed by each college.
