Kolkata: Manoj Malaiviya, 1986 batch IPS officer, took over as a Bengal DGP that acted on Tuesday.
Malaiviya replaced Virendra DGP, which retired on Tuesday.
Virendra was appointed as a DGP of the State in 2018.
He was removed by the Election Commission during the selection only to be restored by the government of Mamata Banerjee when it comes to the office for the third time.
Virendra was appointed as Chair of the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board on August 18.
According to Nabanna’s source, Malaiviya will continue to function as DGP Bengal until the UPSC-State consultation process over the DGP appointment is complete.
Bengal awaits the central panel to choose the DGP.
Malaiviya, who is the most senior IPS officer in Bengal, is expected to look for the central panel of three members.
Until then, Malaiviya will continue.
Malaiviya was promoted as a DGP in 2017 and arranged to retire in 2023.
On August 23, the state government has sent a list of 17 IPS officers to UPSC because everything completed three decades of service.
According to the guidelines, after the state proposes the names for DGPS to UPSC, UPSC will choose three names and send it back to the country.
This is the country’s prerogative to choose one officer from the list.
Even when UPSC chose the three-member panel, the head of the Secretary of State and the DGP of the State Exit was part of the UPSC Committee five members.
Bengal, while sending a list to UPSC, did not send the name of four senior IPS officers Bengal Cadre – Kuldeip Singh, SBS Tomar, Sanjay Chanday and Zulfiquar Hasan – because they are now in central deputation.
While Singh now is DG CRPF, Tomar is a joint secretary at the Cabinet Secretariat.
The state government has initiated the DGP appointment process in June.
This first proposed seven names of ranking officers with DG.
UPSC then requested the name of all ADG with 30 years of work experience, the government of Bengal sent the name 17 IPS officers along with their biodata.
A senior officer said: “Until Tuesday, the UPSC recommendation did not reach the country.
While temporary designation will continue until the state consultation process is complete.”
